On the 19th of June, 2024, the SUG Electoral Commission released a memo addressing the ongoing power issues affecting the University of Benin, Ugbowo, and Ekehuan campuses. The memo mentioned that power on the Ekehuan campus had been restored for over a week at that time, but work was still ongoing to do the same for the Ugbowo campus.

The 77,000+ students of the University of Benin, having exercised more than enough patience regarding the issue, have taken to the streets in a bid to remind the school management of their ongoing plight.

The peaceful protest started in the early hours of July 3rd, 2024, and by 8 am, the student protesters had successfully taken control of the main gate and basement axis. While this is ongoing, normal activities have been put on hold, with faculties forced to declare lecture-free days.

More information will be provided as the protest continues.
