UNIBEN Staff School Fees Hike Sparks Outrage as Tuition Rises to ₦60,000

By,David Simeon

The University of Benin has approved a significant increase in fees at its staff primary school, effective September 2026.

A memo circulated to parents and guardians states that tuition for children of staff members will rise from ₦35,000 to ₦60,000 per session, while non-staff pupils will pay ₦70,000 under the new fee structure.

The development was first reported by Bleeding Pen, which referenced a statement from the school management outlining the revised fees for the upcoming academic session.

The fee breakdown includes a ₦15,000 general cost charge, a ₦10,000 registration fee, and a ₦3,000 Parents-Teachers Association levy, all payable during the first term.

Parents have expressed concern over the almost 100% increase for staff children, describing it as difficult to manage without a corresponding salary adjustment. One parent, who shared a copy of the memo privately, noted that no explanation was provided for the hike.

The University Demonstration Staff School serves both staff members and non-staff residents within and around the university community. As of 22 February, the university management had not issued an official statement explaining the reason for the fee review.

Attempts to obtain a response from university authorities were unsuccessful, leaving parents awaiting clarification ahead of the new academic session.
