The University of Benin has been thrown into shock as Prince Carter Oshodin, a member staff, committed suicide on Friday over his critical financial crisis.

The father of two, being a member of the Non-Academic Staff Union as a Data entry staff was yet to be paid his salary as at the time of his demise, even after the Union had pulled out of the strike which they recently embarked on.

Some members of staff at the University who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident of his death this morning while lamenting the failure of the federal government to pay their salaries.

“Yes he is our staff that killed himself due to lack of money. Even some months ago, he was quoted to have been advising people on coping strategies and yet he took his life which has put his family in a bigger problem.

“We have been paid no dime since we went on strike. This is the 10th of September, the non academic staff that has since resumed have not been paid anything. Boko Haram! No to Western education!,” a professor at the university said.

Late Oshodin was rumoured to have been in the University premises a few days ago, trying to ask for cash to meet his financial needs. It was also gathered that he was finding it increasingly difficult to pay his two daughters’ school fees.

“He committed suicide on Friday and according to a post on his Facebook, he said he was facing financial difficulties and could pay the school fees of his two young daughters. It is a pathetic situation,” another colleague said.

The school authorities have not made any comments on this situation as at press time. ACJ UNIBEN will provide more updates as we receive them.
