Academic Activities Halted, Students Ordered to Vacate Hostels

By O.V.Collins

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced an indefinite shutdown of academic activities, effective immediately. The decision comes amidst ongoing student protests demanding a 24-hour electricity supply and other improvements, which the University’s Senate deems unrealistic.

According to a statement signed by Benedicta Ehanire, Ph.D, ANIPR, DR/PRO, on July 4, 2024, students are required to vacate the hostels immediately. All relevant units of the University are expected to take note and comply with the directive. However, non-teaching staff and staff on essential duties are exempt from the shutdown.

The university’s decision is seen as a response to the students’ refusal to back down on their demands, which have disrupted academic activities in recent days. The situation remains tense, with students and staff affected by the sudden shutdown.
