UNIBEN Set to Partner with Merry Ehanire Mother and Child Hospital, Benin City, to Promote Training of Medical and Lab Science Students

The management of the University of Benin, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie SAN, on Friday, 24 January 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Merry Ehanire Mother and Child Hospital on Reuben Agho Street, G.R.A., Benin City. This visit was a strategic move to establish a partnership with the hospital to enhance the training of medical and laboratory science students at the university.

Among the Vice-Chancellor’s entourage were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Christopher Osubor; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Victor Igbineweka; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Ekehuan Campus), Prof. Buniyamin Ayinde; the representative of the Registrar, Mr Dennis Aigbe; the Acting Librarian, Meggison Tuoyo Esq.; the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. David Izekor; the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Wilson Sadoh; the University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire; and the Chief of Staff to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr Ezekiel Agir.

The Merry Ehanire Mother and Child Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge equipment, as observed during the visit and tour of the hospital. The Vice-Chancellor remarked that Benin City is fortunate to have a hospital of this calibre within its confines.

Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that this strategic partnership would be mutually beneficial, providing the best training opportunities for students of the University of Benin. He also revealed the possibility of extending treatment to university staff with certain conditions at the hospital, in line with the NHIS arrangement.

The University of Benin management team was warmly received by the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Mario Adelaja, who, along with the General Manager, Mr Ejike Onukaogu, guided the Vice-Chancellor and his team around the hospital. The CMD affirmed the hospital’s commitment to partnering with the University of Benin, describing it as a foremost institution of excellence in Nigeria.
