The registrar of the University of Benin sent out a memo to the Deans and Directors of Institutes of various faculties, addressing the underlying reports of unapproved collection of money for project supervision.

According to the memo, some staff have been collecting unapproved charges from students assigned to them for project supervision and it has also been alleged that they victimize and frustrate students who refuse to comply.

This unlawful act, according to the memo does not only “pervert the prestigious image of the university, but also does enormous damage to the excellent academic profile of the institution.”

It is concluded in the memo that any staff found wanting or caught involved in this illegal practice will face “severe sanctions”. The Deans and Directors of Institutes were therefore enjoined to monitor the activities of their staff and ensure complete adherence to the university rules and regulations.
