The University of Benin has reactivated and commissioned its block molding factory as part of efforts by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, to reposition the institution as an innovative capacity-building hub.
The development was made known in a statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, mnipr, on Monday, October 7, 2025.
According to the statement, the factory, which had been moribund for years, was revitalised with machines provided under the Federal Government’s assisted funds for universities. The facility is domiciled in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Speaking during the commissioning, the Vice Chancellor stated that the initiative aligns with the triple helix model of research synergy involving the academia, government, and industry. He noted that the factory would serve dual purposes, as a hands-on training facility for students and as a commercial venture to generate internal revenue for the University.
Professor Omoregie commended all staff involved in the project and urged them to maintain high production standards consistent with UNIBEN’s commitment to excellence.
During a briefing, the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Okiemute Ogirigbo, revealed that the factory currently produces six-inch and nine-inch blocks, all of which have passed the required integrity tests.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Christopher Osubor; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Victor Igbineweka; and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Ekehuan Campus), Professor Buniyamin Ayinde. Also present were the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola; University Librarian, Professor Jane Aba; and Director, Petroleum and Energy Systems Research Centre, Professor Olalekan Olafuyi.
The revitalisation of the block molding factory marks another milestone in the University’s drive to promote practical learning, innovation, and sustainable revenue generation.
