After over six months of closure, the University of Benin has reopened its back gate.

The back gate which serves as a major access into the school from Ekosodin village, was reopened on Tuesday, 6th October 2020.

It will be recalled that the University had on the 29th of March shut the back gate as a result of the indefinite shutdown of the school due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The closure of the school’s back gate restricted occupants of Ekosodin from gaining easy access into the school as they were asked to take alternate routes. The university’s main gate, however, was open all through this period.

Access into the school from both entry points is still under the condition that individuals must put on their facemasks as an adherence to NCDC’s Covid-19 protocols. The school still adheres to a ‘No facemask, No entry’ rule. Security agents of the great UNIBEN have been keeping to the guidelines as they are always seen asking individuals without facemasks to go back from the entry points.

This development however, has caused individuals to question the possibility of the school resuming in earnest (this, at the time of filling this report has not been established by the school authority).

Could this be the sign of hope for students eagerly awaiting resumption? What about the ongoing ASUU, NASU and SSANU strike? Will UNIBEN still resume amidst all these happenings? Well, these are questions only time will answer.

Recall, the University had earlier instructed members of staff from CONTISS 09 and above to resume duties from Monday, 5th October, 2020. But the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), embarked on a 2 weeks warning strike that same day.

We await new developments and the Union of Campus Journalists, UNIBEN Chapter will surely keep you updated.
