The University of Benin Management has reaffirmed its prohibition of sign-out celebrations by final-year students, warning that defaulters risk expulsion, rustication, or withdrawal of their certificates.
In a circular dated October 6, 2025, the institution restated its earlier Senate-approved position, declaring that no sign-out celebration of any kind will be tolerated. The directive also forbids the signing of T-shirts, the playing of music, parading around campuses in vehicles, large student gatherings after examinations, and the mounting of photo stands by photographers. Parents and guardians of final-year students were equally advised to stay away from the campus, particularly on the last day of examinations.
The circular emphasised that any violation of the directive will attract severe disciplinary measures, including the withdrawal of certificates, rustication, or expulsion.
The University noted that the move is part of efforts to maintain discipline and orderliness within its campuses as the second-semester examinations wind down.
This latest warning, which reiterates an existing policy, comes amid growing anticipation among final-year students preparing to complete their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session. While many students view the tradition of signing out as a moment of joy and relief after years of study, the Management insists that such activities have, over the years, degenerated into unruly celebrations, hence the need for firm control.
