The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has inaugurated peace club executives at the University of Benin and sensitised new members.
In a two-day programme held at the NAAT Hall, Uniben, PIND conducted a capacity-building programme for new members on Friday, 25 October 2024, after inaugurating the executives of the newly established Peace Club the day before.
On Thursday, 24 October 2024, a seven-member executive team was presented to members as they swore to abide by the constitution of the foundation.
Established in 2010, PIND is a Nigerian non-profit organisation that promotes peace and equitable economic growth in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
PIND has worked closely with numerous partners over the years to implement market-based, community-owned programmes to mitigate conflicts and boost economic opportunities for local businesses.
PIND projects span the nine states of the Niger Delta region, which include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers.
PIND has established peace clubs in some universities in the Niger Delta region, including the Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, and the University of Calabar.
Dr Iro Aghedo, a consultant to PIND and an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Uniben, was made the Patron of the Uniben Chapter of the PIND Peace Club.
Delegates from PIND in Rivers State were on the ground to observe the two-day programme held at the NAAT Hall.
After being taught volunteerism and leadership on the first day, members were also enlightened on topics such as early conflict warning and response systems, peacebuilding, and conflict management.
These topics were covered by Dr I. Aghedo and Mr Super Afeno, who engaged members in interactive sessions for a better understanding.
While expressing his appreciation at the close of the programme, the Patron of the Peace Club, Dr Aghedo, encouraged the members, saying that they would benefit greatly from being members of the Peace Club even after their time at Uniben.
