In a recent reminder addressed to the Provost, Deans, and Directors of the University of Benin on Thursday, 10th August, 2023, Prof. Lilian I. Salami, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Benin, underscored the paramount importance of heeding the standing prohibition on social activities within the university campus premises. The memorandum, issued as a gentle reminder, highlighted the critical need to cultivate a secure and conducive atmosphere that is necessary for both effective teaching and productive learning.

Recall that following her inauguration as VC, Prof. Salami reviewed the ongoing ban on social activities, and she subsequently affirmed the decision to uphold its enforcement. The latest communique, which serves as a recall of sorts, stemmed from the concerning trend of disregarding the ban, according to management, that was previously observed among some members of the university community.

“Changes in the activities leading to the ban have not occurred,” Prof. Salami reiterated, pointing to the instances that initially prompted the imposition of the ban. “…we all are witnesses to the consequences of such unguided gatherings,” the VC’s statement reads, further reinstating the gravity of the need to maintain the intent behind the ban.

While acknowledging the importance of providing students with leisure opportunities, the VC emphasised that these activities should be pursued on an individual basis or within small, manageable groups.

The reminder also explicitly outlined the repercussions for those who choose to flout the ban. Any breach of the prohibition on social activities would result in the application of maximum sanctions upon the defaulters, Prof. Salami stated.

Prof. Salami, in addition, rallied all constituents of the university to act as catalysts for change in reshaping the students’ perspectives and reorienting them during their time on campus. She expressed her optimistic belief that this collective endeavour would contribute significantly to a more promising and desirable future for both the student body and the university itself.
