The management of the University of Benin has directed that the University be shut down for academic activities, and that students resident on campus should vacate the school hostels by 12pm on Wednesday, 22nd February, 2023. This is coming roughly two weeks after the National Universities Commission ordered all universities to shut down academic activities for the period of Nigeria’s general elections.
In a statement released in the early hours of Sunday morning by the public relations unit of the University of Benin, and signed by the Registrar, A.A. Bobola, the management revealed that normal academic activities will resume on Wednesday, 15th March, 2023.
“In compliance with the directive of the Federal Government as conveyed vide the circular from the National Universities Commission dated 3rd February, 2023, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lilian I. Salami has directed that the University should be closed for academic activities between Wednesday 22nd February, 2023 and Tuesday 14th March, 2023.
Normal academic activities will therefore resume on Wednesday 15th March, 2023,” the statement reads.
“Accordingly, all students resident on campus are to vacate the Hostels latest 12noon on Wednesday 22nd February, 2023.
In conclusion, the management stated, “The Vice Chancellor and the University Management enjoin all students to conduct themselves peacefully during the period of the general elections, and wish them safe travels all through.”
