UNIBEN: Life Sciences Election Postponed Indefinitely Amid Security Concerns

By Aweh-Omeiza Oiza

The National Association of Life Sciences Students (NALSS) 2022/2023 election, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, has been postponed indefinitely. This decision comes as a response to security concerns raised by the school authorities.

The NALSS Electoral Commission released a statement today, announcing the postponement and assuring all candidates, stakeholders, and the entire student body that a new election date will be communicated in the coming hours or days.

The chairman of the Electoral Committee, Hon. Jeremiah Osikhena Irenaye, expressed regret over any inconveniences this postponement may have caused and thanked everyone for their understanding.

“This is to inform all candidates, stakeholders, and the entire students of the National Association of Life Sciences Students that the election scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, has been postponed indefinitely due to security concerns by the School Authorities. A new date will be communicated by the Electoral commission in coming hours/days,” the statement reads.

Speculations say the postponement is due to the multiple shooting incidents that happened in the Ugbowo Campus of the University of Benin on Friday. This unexpected delay in the election process has left many in anticipation of the new election date and heightened concerns regarding the security on the day of the Election.
