The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been grappling with a power supply crisis since Friday, 24 May 2024, due to a dispute with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over unpaid electricity bills of about 280 million naira for the month of April 2024, leading to a disconnection of the school’s power supply by BEDC. As a result, the university community has been forced to rely on alternative power sources, including generators.

In light of this situation, the Institute of Child Health (ICH) UNIBEN/UBTH has organised a seminar to address the safety concerns surrounding generator fumes. The seminar, scheduled for Thursday, 30 May 2024, at 11:00 am, will feature a presentation by Mrs Abieyuwa Peace Omoregie, a Research Fellow at the Institute of Child Health, University of Benin.

The seminar, titled “Generator Fumes In Close Proximity: Are We Safe?” aims to raise awareness about the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to generator fumes. This is particularly relevant given the current power outage situation at UNIBEN, which has led to an increased reliance on generators.

The timing of this seminar is significant, as the university community is currently vulnerable to the hazards of generator fumes. The power outage crisis has left students, staff, and faculty members with no choice but to use generators, which can pose serious health risks if not properly ventilated. The seminar is expected to provide valuable insights and solutions to mitigate the risks associated with generator fumes.

The seminar will be chaired by Dr Andrew Obi, Head of the Department of Community Health, University of Benin. Prof Mrs Ayebo Sadoh, Director of the Institute of Child Health, University of Benin, amongst many others are expected to be in attendance.
