UNIBEN: Health Concerns Rise in Hostels due to Contaminated Water

By Owobu Maureen

Students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are grappling with a growing health crisis within the hostel premises due to reported cases of contaminated water. The issue has raised serious concerns among the student community, prompting calls for immediate action from the university administration.

Over the past few weeks, numerous students have come forward with complaints about the quality of water in the hostel. Many have reported developing skin and facial rashes after using the water for bathing, leaving them worried about their well-being.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, some students disclosed that the problem has persisted for an extended period. Despite repeated complaints, the university administration has yet to take any significant steps to address the situation, causing mounting frustration among the student body.

The severity of the situation escalated further when some individuals began to experience persistent body itching shortly after using the water for personal hygiene. Some students have even attempted to add antiseptic to the water, hoping to mitigate the issue, but to no avail.

Alarming reports of transparent worms and other foreign organisms found in the water supply have heightened concerns about the potential health risks students are exposed to.

In response to the alarming health risks, students are now demanding swift action from the university administration. They are calling on the authorities to provide immediate access to clean and safe water within the hostels. Furthermore, they are urging the administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the source of the contamination to prevent any further harm.

The university administration bears a crucial responsibility for the health and safety of its students. By failing to address the problem of contaminated water promptly, they are putting the well-being of the student population at risk. Urgent measures are needed to ensure a healthy and conducive living environment within the hostels.

As the situation continues to unfold, students hope that their concerns will be taken seriously and appropriate measures will be taken to safeguard their health.
