UNIBEN: FASA’s GENERAL ASSEMBLY HIGHLIGHTS CAMPUS HYGIENE AND EXAM ETHICS

By Zainab Bakare

The Faculty of Arts Students’ Association at the University of Benin held its General Assembly on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in Faculty of Arts 1000 lecture theatre.

The general assembly, organised by the present administration of FASA led by Comr. Paschal Anazor, the executive Governor of the association, had in attendance students of the Faculty, Honourable members of the Faculty parliament, and other important dignitaries. An Honourable of the Edo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Hon. Dr. Richard Osaro Edosa, was also in attendance.

Hon. Dr. Richard Osaro Edosa, in his remarks, expressed how glad he was to be present at the General Assembly to interact with the students. According to him, he was once a lecturer at the University of Benin, in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in the Department of Medical Biochemistry, before he took on the path of politics. However, he expressed his concern over the dirty environment of the lecture theatre where the general assembly was held. According to Hon. Dr. Edosa, “The environment is too dirty, with dustbins here and there, and the air, the dust is carrying everything over here.”

Also, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, in his remarks, expressed his disappointment at the number of reported cases of malpractice from the Faculty of Arts and said it would be a huge failure on his part if he did not mention this in the interactive session. The Dean said, “You can only appear before the examination misconduct committee if you had committed something else in the classroom during exams. Meaning, people are carrying in telephones, people are carrying in small papers scribbled with all manners of things.”

However, the Dean concluded by promising to make available a handbook containing the penalties for examination malpractice to the Governor of FASA, Comr. Paschal Anazor.

Further into the general assembly, the students were entertained by fellow colleagues, then a questions and answers session, which happened to be the last part of the assembly. The students were able to express their disapproval on some issues, such as the unavailability of Students’ Identity Cards, the dumpsite close to the lecture theatre, and the lack of access to good toilet facilities, requesting the Governor and his team to work and resolve the issues raised.
