The University of Benin has announced in an official memo from the office of the Registrar that Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday. This is connected to the Federal Government’s pronouncement to honour the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
Following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the holiday was proclaimed by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior. However, it is part of the seven-day national mourning period to honour and respect the late President Muhammadu Buhari for his contributions and involvement in Nigeria’s democracy, unity, and national development.
The holiday, as stated by Minister Olubunmu Tunji Ojo, is an opportunity for Nigerians to meditate on Buhari’s life, leadership, and the values he has upheld, like peace, patriotism, and service to the nation.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie (SAN), expressed sadness over the ex-President’s death and sent condolences to his family. He also asked the University community to join in praying for the peaceful rest of Buhari’s soul.
All students and staff are advised to observe the public holiday on Tuesday, 15th July 2025.
