UNIBEN ASUU, Others Join NLC’s Indefinite Nationwide Strike

By O.V.Collins

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin chapter, has joined the indefinite nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The strike, which began on Monday, is in protest of the Federal Government’s failure to conclude the upward review of the National Minimum Wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariffs.

According to a directive from the ASUU National Secretariat, all members of the union at the University of Benin are expected to comply with the strike action with immediate effect. ASUU Chairman of the University of Benin, Ray N. Chikogu, in a memo to members, stated that “there shall be no teaching, supervision, conduct of any examination, attendance of board or senate meetings, etc.” during the strike.

The memo, which was released on June 3, 2024, urged members to comply fully with the directive, saying “We shall overcome!”

The strike is expected to affect academic activities at the University of Benin, with no lectures, examinations, or other academic activities taking place until the strike is called off.

The NLC had called for the strike following the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands on the minimum wage and electricity tariffs. The strike has been joined by various labour unions across the country, including ASUU.
