In the early hours of today, Thursday, at 4:35am, an alarm was raised by a girl in Hall 2, Block E asking girls to come outside, saying there was a man in the hostel.

According to an eye witness, the thief had entered Block E; Room 104 at some minutes past 4am. When questioned by one of the girls in the room about his identity since they couldn’t recognize him as one of the security guards, he left the room and started walking away. The girl then went on to alert the hostel porters and security guards.

As at this time , the suspect had left Block E and was seen by other girls on the fly over running to Block F. ACJ-UNIBEN learnt that the suspect later ran to Block C and started banging on doors. By this time , most girls were awake and had mobilized themselves to search for the thief from room to room but the search proved fruitless as some girls in Block D alerted the security guards that they had seen the thief jump over the fence. An eye witness claimed that the culprit was wearing a black shirt, jean trouser, with a sling bag and he had dreadlocks. Later on, it was discovered that security officers on duty at Faculty of Education chased the thief after he jumped over the fence but they were unale to catch him.

As at the time of writing this report, Hall 2 girls were still at alert and the hostel excos along with the mayoress and some security were seen moving around the hostel.

Speculations flying around say either the thief has an accomplice in the hostel or the suspect is a girl disguised as a boy. According to some of the security guards, a similar event happened in 2018 at Hall 1 and the culprit was a girl.

Hall 2 Occupants State Reasons Why They Keep Experiencing Thefts In The Hostel

Hostelites in Hall 2 have outlined some factors as the major issues contributing to the frequent thefts in the hostel. They cited a slight elevation behind Block D and said that anyone could easily gain access into the Hall of residence by using that elevation. They also faulted the poor lighting of the blocks, stating that the dark corners around the buidings hide the unscrupulous theives while they carry out ther mischiefs. The residents complained that there is a light pole behind Block D but it is not functioning. When Mmasi, Mayoress of Hall 2 was questioned, she said that the School Management and Minister of Works were aware and were going to do something about it. A mass of the girls living in Hall 2 pointed out that the hostel lacked good security and urged the officers to diligently do their job well.
