The UNIBEN 5-Aside, an inter-faculty sports event held every first semester, had its third match lineup played on Sunday, March 30, 2024 at the Liberty Stadium in the Aminu Kano Residential Hall (Hall 3). This event, which started on Friday, March 28, 2025, drew a large crowd of students and alumni from various faculties.
The first match of the day started at about 2 pm, with the male teams of the Faculty of Vocational Technical Education and Ekenwa Campus competing for the win. The match, which ended with a 2 – 1 victory from the Ekenwa team, opened with tension arising from the audience as VTE scored their first goal in the first half. However, the resilient Ekenwa team gave their best, securing a narrow victory in the second half.
Ohonba Vincent, a student from the Faculty of Vocational Technical Education, in an interview with ACJ UNIBEN correspondence, expressed his disappointment at the defeat of the team representing his faculty.
“We gave it our all against Ekenwa but just couldn’t hold on. We’ll come back stronger next time”
The female teams of the Faculties of Arts, Agriculture, Social Sciences, and Ekenwa also had fixed matches, with Arts team edging the Agriculture team out with a single goal, leaving the scores at 1 – 0, and the Social Sciences team dominating the match with Ekenwa at three(3) goals to non.
Despite the Social Sciences female team victory, the male team faced defeat against the team of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, losing at a goal to non, with the Physical Sciences team securing their win in the first half.
Praise Godwin, a student from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, was thrilled about her faculty’s performance.
“Winning against Agric Female was amazing! My Faculty worked hard for this and it paid off”, she said.
A member of Social Sciences Alumni Body, Emeka Ibekwe, reflected on the faculty’s mixed results:
“It was great to win against Ekenwa Female, but losing to Physical Sciences was tough”
The day’s match lineup ended at about 6 pm with students from different facilties celebrating or reflecting on their team’s win or defeat.
The 5-Aside inter-faculty competition still continues with different match lineups for each day, creating an environment for tension and excitement and fostering the sporting spirit in the university community.
