Two separate accidents occurred on Sunday, March 30, 2025, during Eid-Al-Fitr in the Maryland area of Lagos and the Ogijo area of Ogun State. The incidents resulted in the deaths of two people and left 11 others injured.
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, the accident in Ogun State took place around 6 a.m. on Sunday. He explained that the accident occurred due to a collision between a truck with a burst tire and a Mazda passenger bus, which killed one person and left 11 others injured.
Akinbiyi stated, “A fatal accident occurred at the Five Star area in Ogijo at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday.” He noted that the victims were rescued by emergency responders and taken to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention.
The truck driver explained that the accident was caused by a sudden burst of his truck’s front right tire, which made the vehicle lose control and collide with a stationary 18-seater Mazda bus that was picking up passengers. Thirteen people were involved in the accident, including two in the truck and 11 in the Mazda bus. One person died on the spot, while 11 others sustained injuries.
The accident caused traffic congestion, but the situation was quickly handled by officials from TRACE, the police, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Another similar accident occurred in Lagos, and Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, revealed that the incident involved two mini-buses (Korope) along the Maryland axis, leaving a pedestrian dead.
“Preliminary inquiries indicate that one of the two vehicles, due to careless overspeeding, swerved out of control and violently collided with a stationary mini-bus, mercilessly killing the unsuspecting pedestrian,” Taofiq explained.
Reacting to the accident, Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. Giwa, speaking through Taofiq, urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained and checked before taking to the road to prevent accidents and loss of life.
He emphasized that public safety is a priority for everyone, and violations of traffic laws pose a threat to public safety. Motorists, he said, should operate within legal parameters to prevent further tragedies.
