A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, when a thunderstorm claimed the lives of three students while they were engaged in a game of football at Tansi International College in Okpuno, within the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The remaining six students who were affected by the storm received medical attention at a hospital in Awka. An eyewitness reported that the students had been participating in a training session on the school’s football pitch under the guidance of their coach, as part of their preparations for an upcoming football competition. Although the coach had concluded the training session, some students chose to linger and continue playing football.

Unexpectedly, lightning, accompanied by a fierce thunderstorm, descended upon the area and struck the boys, resulting in their sudden collapse. A vigilant teacher heard the boys’ cries for help and hurried to the pitch, discovering all nine students writhing on the ground. He promptly raised the alarm, and the injured students were swiftly transported to the school’s clinic before being transferred to a hospital in Awka.

Regrettably, three of the nine boys did not survive the ordeal. Their parents have been notified, and news of this tragic incident sent shockwaves throughout the local community on Sunday.
