TikTok now limits users under 18, from using certain filters due to the tremendous impacts of social media in the lives of teenagers.
This was after a study carried out by the owner of the online platform in conjunction with UK-based non-profit Internet Matters, which explored the influence of digital platforms on youths in society.
The findings, which were later published in a report titled “Unfiltered: The Role of Authenticity, Belonging, and Connection,” highlighted some of the positive impacts of maintaining authenticity online and the sense of inclusivity that these platforms can provide.
However, the report highlighted some disturbing facts about certain photo filters, which enable users to alter their appearance online, as it could affect the way they see themselves when the cameras are turned off.
A clear distinction was therefore made between funny filters like animal effects and those that could be used to modify one’s appearance in a rather unrealistic way. TikTok has taken a bold step to limit the effects of body-altering filters, especially for teenagers, as most of these filters will now be available for only users above 18.
In addition to that, Tiktok is also taking steps to provide more information on how these filters should be used, and the consequences of using them wrongly.
This is in a bid to promote a sense of authenticity and honesty amongst users in the digital space.
