There are two things that can actually change a man and they are money and power – Comr. Musa Al-hassan, Governor, NALSS

Governor, National Association of Life Sciences Students, UNIBEN Chapter, Comrade Musa Al-hassan, shares with ACJ-UNIBEN the waxes and wanes of his presiding Administration.

The 400 Level student of the department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, alongside the Secretary General of the association, Comr. Eberechi Possible, warmly welcomed ACJ-UNIBEN to the Life Sciences Secretariat on Wednesday, 26th January, 2022.

In an interview with ACJ-UNIBEN, Musa mentioned that the way one sees an office when he is not in it is totally different from the way the office seems when the person assumes that office.  He revealed that this is one of the basic challenges he faced at the beginning of his tenure as Elected Governor.

Two heads they say are better than one. He talked about the unification of the SRC members, the Executive members and the goal of spreading this unity in the faculty as another major challenge.

Comrade Al-hassan also mentioned that the faculty once experienced a security issue, however, “The Dean has actually addressed that issue by lightning up the faculty. Initially, it was like doom at night”, he tipped. Musa further stated that he experienced difficulty bridging politics with his studies.

Amidst all these challenges, what has to be done must be done. As he is the people’s choice, the welfare of the students must be met. “Welfarism is too versatile to be summarized. It’s something that is very big. Life science has a total number of 7000+ students and the welfare of every student is paramount”, the Governor said.

On resumption in office, he said a meeting was held with the faculty’s and departmental Offices of The Directors Of Welfare, so as to ensure efficiency. He also stated that his administration has worked on the harmony between the students and their lecturers.

The Health of Life Sciences Students was not neglected as Comrade Musa elucidated that his administration embarked on projects of fixing the Faculty toilets and maintaining clean environs.

On the issue of lecturers missing classes, the Governor revealed that course reps were told to keep a list of the lecturers who are not perpetual in class so as to curb inconsistencies. It was discovered that the Dean of the Faculty has vowed not to take it likely with any lecturer who is not consistent in class.

As regards social events coming up in the faculty, the governor stated that his administration works in accordance with the rules and regulations of the school. He revealed that due to some adjustments made by the School management, most of Life Sciences events will be more of Educational programs than parties. Regarding the upcoming final Year week, Musa said calls have been put through to the FYB chairmen of each department to discuss the restrictions put in place by the school. A visit was also paid to the Dean to further confirm if a social event, party and diner would be possible for the Final Year Week but the Dean said it cannot hold. Musa further added that more educational events like Interdepartmental Quiz, Debates and Book Sales will be held in place of dinners and parties.

Conclusively, as regards the question of a successor to his office, the Governor said that he believes the system is a democratic one and whoever assumes the office, must be who the people think is capable enough to lead them. He finally stated, that two things he believes can change a man are Money and Power.
