The University of Benin which was established on November 23rd, 1970, has grown rapidly and significantly into one of the leading institutions in Nigeria. She has greatly improved from having just three faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Engineering to its current state of fifteen faculties, three schools, three institutes, and fifteen research centers. Behind this transformation is the previous Vice-Chancellor, prof. Lilian Imuentiyan Salami was appointed on the 25th of October 2019 but officially assumed office on December second that same year.
She made history as the first Indigenous female and second vice chancellor at the University of Benin.
Professor Lilian Imuentiyan Salami is a part of the International Federation of Home Economics (IFHE), the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), and the Home Economics Professional Association of Nigeria ( HEPAN). She was the pioneer president of the Home Economics Teachers’ Association of Edo State and a steering member of the Home Economics Council of Nigeria. She attained a pioneering membership in the African Nutrition Leadership Programme, South Africa. Also, she is the current chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNV) and the Vice President of the Association of African Universities (AAU).
During her term, she brought into life impactful initiatives outlined in her seven pillars Vision for the University of Benin which inc
1. An establishment of open communication to enable direct interaction between herself and staff, as well as students tagged; ” see something, say something”.
2. An Introduction of a telemedicine platform to bring healthcare platforms closer to staff and students.
3. An establishment of a student copy transcript by her will be issued as the students graduate.
4. Facilitation of the collection of certificates by students right from the day of graduation.
5. Support needy students by reactivating students’ work/program.
6. The introduction of Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom has helped boost E-learning.
These reforms put into life demonstrate her commitment to making the University of Benin a modern and worthy institution.
