The damaged rail opposite the University of Benin Main Gate highlights a serious and pressing hazard to pedestrians. This particular stretch of the Lagos-Benin Expressway, which has had its dividing rail in a state of disrepair for several weeks now, has become a dangerous point of vulnerability. Yesterday, on my way home, I witnessed several pedestrians crossing over the damaged rail onto the busy expressway which is a very dangerous act that could easily lead to fatal accidents.

It is important that the management of the University of Benin takes necessary action to address this issue. The current state of the rail poses not only a risk to the safety of students but also to anyone who might be tempted to cross the road, despite the obvious dangers. Students, especially, often show a lack of caution, diving to cut corners and attempting to cross the expressway at unsafe points. Such a nonchalant attitude, when combined with the compromised state of the rail, could very well result in catastrophic consequences.

It is incumbent upon the relevant authorities, specifically those supervising the university’s campus and the surrounding area, to address this issue with urgency. Repairing or replacing the damaged rail is an obvious first step, but additional measures may also be essential to educate pedestrians about the harm involved in such indiscreet actions. The compromised state of the rail, coupled with the habitual carelessness of some students, could well lead to a disastrous outcome if not rectified promptly. The university’s management must act now to protect the well-being of all who traverse this stretch of road.
