The global head of the Anglican Church, Justin Welby, resigned on Tuesday following the revelation of a review indicating that senior church leaders, including the Archbishop, covered up the abuse of young men and over a hundred boys.
The Archbishop admitted that he first heard about the abuse allegations in 2013, the year he became Archbishop, and acknowledged that his efforts to investigate and address the issue did not yield results.
Welby’s resignation came amid criticism from the victims and other church leaders.
The scandal has had an adverse effect on Welby’s tenure, which included officiating at high-profile events such as the wedding of Prince Harry and the sermon at Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral.
His resignation marked a pivotal moment for the Church of England, as it grapples with the legacy of abuse scandals and attempts to restore trust among its followers.
