The newly elected governor of Taraba state, Agbu Kefas has declared free education in the state’s primary and secondary school with effect from the next academic session.
The governor confirmed the development in a post shared on his Facebook page on Friday, July 7 2023. The governor claimed the reason for this decision is to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as Petrol which has led to the astronomic rise in the cost of transportation and overall cost of living.
The post sighted by legit.ng read thus:
“I spent an ample time of my Friday with the pupils and teachers of Ebenezer primary school in Wukari. There, I announced that primary and secondary education in Taraba state from the next session will be free. It is the government’s responsibility to bear some expenses on behalf of the populace at this time.”
The decision came 48 hours after the governor issued a directive of 50% reduction in the state university tuition fee from 2022/23 academic session to alleviate the country’s current predicament. Emmanuel Bello, the spokesperson to the governor disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, July 5.
The governor noted that was one of his priorities to give quality education to the people of the state.
