The Students’ Union Executive Council, Universitiy of Benin, has condemned the assault of a student leader by a staff member.

 

In a memo released on Friday, February 7, 2025, the council confirmed that the assault of the president of the National Association of Medical Laboratory Science Students’ by one Dr Owie took place and has declared zero tolerance for assaults like this.

 

ACJ UNIBEN reports that the president of the National Association of Medical Laboratory Science Students had been allegedly assaulted on Thursday, February 6, 2025, by a lecturer in the department, Dr. Owie over the refusal of a tailor recommendation for the students’ scrub from the said lecturer.

 

The Executive Council has established that they will ensure the issue is not covered up and they have demanded that an immediate disciplinary action be taken against Dr. Owie. They have also demanded a formal written apology letter from the lecturer addressing the victim and the entire student body and that the university implement strict measures against staff misconduct.

 

The council has established that they would ensure every student’s rights are upheld, and they encouraged students to report every form of harassment or assault to the union.

 

“To all students: your rights matter. If you ever experience any form of abuse, harassment, report it immediately. The Students’ Union is here for you, and we will fight for justice at all costs.

 

We will keep the student body informed as we continue to follow up on this case. We will not back down.”
