In a formally issued statement dated August 1, 2025, a UNIBEN student, Ehiguese Eghonghon Shedrack, publicly announced his decision to withdraw all pending petitions related to the recently concluded Students’ Union election.
In his statement, Shedrack addressed his fellow UNIBEN students, clarifying that the decision was made “out of deep respect for [his] parents and the Dean of [his] Faculty.” He described the move as both “conscious and voluntary.”
Despite withdrawing his petitions, he emphasized that the decision “does not, in any way, amount to an endorsement of the conduct or the outcome of the said election.” Shedrack reaffirmed his concerns regarding irregularities that, according to him, marred the electoral process. He stated, “I stand firmly by the concerns I have previously raised and I maintain my convictions regarding the irregularities that marred the process.”
He made it clear that the withdrawal was not influenced by threats or coercion. “This decision is not born out of fear, favour, coercion, or any form of undue influence. It is neither the result of threats nor submission to pressure,” Shedrack wrote. Instead, he framed the act as “a deliberate act of respect for the wise counsel of those I hold in higher esteem—particularly my parents and my Faculty Dean.”
Reassuring students of his continued commitment to their welfare, Shedrack stated, “While I step back from this particular path, my commitment to fairness and the well-being of students remains unwavering.”
He concluded by assuring students of his ongoing availability and support. “I want you to be assured that I will continue to be available to serve and support the students of this University whenever and wherever my help is needed”, he stated.
