The long awaited decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on whether or not to invoke an indefinite strike has been shifted to another meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) scheduled to kick off by 12pm tonight.
“NEC for NEC” as the meeting was tagged is an extensive continuation of the ongoing two-day meeting of NEC members which has been verifying the status of every member chapter of the union on whether to embark on the industrial action.
The National Executive Council meeting, which began yesterday at the Ade Ajayi Auditorium in UNILAG, Akoka, was engaged after sensitisation congress meetings were held across various ASUU branches nationwide, while also observing a lecture free day across all member universities.
A source from the leadership of the agitated union tipped Newsmen to be ready for an impromptu briefing from ASUU on Monday.
The NEC meeting, which until now remains inconclusive and had commenced on Saturday at the Ade Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG, was suddenly relocated to Tayo Aderinokun Lecture Hall close to the university’s guest house on Sunday over what a reliable source cited as the fear of bugging of the meeting auditorium by secret agents of the Nigerian government.
“You know the matter at hand is very sensitive and ASUU has been very careful. So it got information that the venue had been bugged over night and had to relocate to another venue to continue its meeting on Sunday. It is a serious thing. But the final decision will be taken by midnight today (Sunday),” a member of ASUU who begged to remain anonymous told newsmen on Sunday evening.
The source also mentioned that it was obvious that the mass of the members of National Executive Council had opted for the commencement of an indefinite strike action, pointing out what he described as the poor commitment of the government to the union’s demands.
