Just like every other young person whether a pupil, student or an undergraduate; the news about ‘no school on Monday’ usually spread like wide fire and most times ironically brings inexplicable smiles to the faces of many. Another day to rest and play around…you know all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and a break from a hectic Monday wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has UPDATED the general public on its intention to have a lecture-free day on Monday, 7th February 2022. This is coming after months of ASUU, waiting like a barren woman expecting to miss her period at each passing month, but ending up receiving the uncalled visitor…in this very case ASUU, patiently waiting on the Federal Government to fulfil its part of the 2009 agreement, which was revisited in 2020 after a 9-month strike from the Union.
Therefore, the Academics Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared Monday, February 7, a lecture-free day to hold a Congress meeting to sensitize their members across all University Chapters in Nigeria as regards the looming strike. The Union has provided a reason for the declaration of lecture-free days in universities across the country, just as it has hinted of a possible industrial action any moment from now due to its dispute with the federal government over unresolved issues in the education sector.
The National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who confirmed this report also stated that multiple circulars had been sent to various branches of the union announcing the decision. The Professor has assured of the nobleness of this exercise, which mandates different chapters of the organization to sensitize the general public on the same. Not failing to clarify that the Union haven’t commenced any strike yet, but will keep sensitizing the media and general public of the developments of things.
Although President Muhammadu Buhari, had less than a week ago, assured of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling the agreement with the ASUU, pleading with the union to exercise patience and consider current economic realities. But it seems ASUU will take no assurance until it’s commensurated with positive action from the central government.
Back to the Uniben chapter, a sub-body of the ASUU there exist some mild form of uncertainties on whether or not lectures will hold as usual as various faculties in the University. However, the Students Union Government through its Public Relations Officier in the person of Comr. AFOLABI OLABIYI in an official circular attempted to calm the student community down while clearly stating that until an official letter is released from the Varsity management, the widespread news on lecture-free days might not hold swag.
In the memo, Comrade Afolabi OLabiyi acknowledged that “…the fate of classes holding tomorrow still lies in the hands of the school management, as we await an official confirmation from the Central administration; Students will be updated as regards this before the end of today” he added.
A lecture-free day if announced by the varsity Management will surely bring joy to the hearts of many within the Student Community.
