Another meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government has again ended in deadlock on Tuesday, resulting in the continuation of the six-month old strike by university lecturers in the country.

The leadership of ASUU had sat with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee in a closed door meeting on Tuesday at the National University Commission in Abuja in a bid to sign agreements and put an end to the prolonged industrial action.

A senior member of ASUU, who craved anonymity told Newsmen that members of the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come with any new offer on the table.

The source said the committee insteaded pleaded with the lecturers to suspend the ongoing strike, with promises that their demands will be treated in the 2023 budget and resolved for good.

The meeting reportedly started at about 12pm, lasting for about three hours without any concrete agreement being arrived at.

Recall that ASUU embarked on a four-week warning strike on February 14.

On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government meet all of its demands.

On May 9, a 12-week extension was announced but the union and Since then, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.

The lecturers are requesting improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities, academic autonomy, payment of university revitalisation funds which amounts to about N1.1 trillion, amongst other demands.
