Six Students Suspended at Federal University of Dutsin-Ma, Katsina

By Oyinlola Ayomide

The Federal University of Dutsin-Ma, located in Katsina State, has taken action by suspending six students following their alleged involvement in the tragic killing of a fellow student, Abubakar Nasir-Barda, who was in his 200-level of study. The University’s spokesperson, Habib Aminu Amar, officially conveyed this decision on a Sunday.

The incident had initially led to the detention of these six students by the state police, as announced by NANS (National Association of Nigerian Students). In response, the University issued a statement expressing its deep concern and disappointment over the unfortunate event, which stemmed from a dispute over a female student.

The University’s management swiftly reacted to the incident by establishing an interim committee to investigate the matter. Upon receiving a preliminary report from this committee on September 30, 2023, it was revealed that the incident had occurred off-campus, outside the University’s dormitories. The University’s security personnel promptly intervened to mediate the situation and prevent further conflicts among the involved students.

While the police continued their investigation, leading to the arrest of the six students, the committee unanimously recommended that the University invoke section 5.5 of its Academic guidelines, resulting in the suspension of these students pending the outcome of the police investigation. The University’s management acted on this recommendation by suspending all six students involved.
