The Sciences Students Association (SESA) of the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology (CIT), Faculty of Education, University of Benin, on Tuesday, February 6, unexpectedly had their sitting interrupted and cancelled by an unknown individual.

The sitting, according to a release made available to the Campus Journalists dated Sunday, 4th February 2024, had invited key stakeholders of the department for the sitting scheduled for Tuesday, February 6th.

A few minutes before the commencement of the plenary, a text message from the Faculty Security Commandant stated that the sitting didn’t have security clearance.

In our enquiry as to why the sitting was called off, ACJ UNIBEN found out that an unknown individual had informed security about the sitting, notifying them that the sitting had no clearance.

The speaker of the department, Rt. Hon. Amos Amayo, while addressing the house in room 001, the faculty of education, stated that the sitting was an emergency one called for on Sunday to attend to an urgent situation affecting the department from the free flow of running, hence their failure to get clearance because of the short notice.

Rt. Hon. Amos explained that the meeting was cancelled due to security concerns and apologised to attendants, including observers, parliamentarians, and departmental and faculty representatives. He added that a new date would be announced shortly, and if it is not possible to hold the meeting in person, it may be held online instead.

Hon. Amos, however, assured everyone that they would be informed of the new date, “Considering the technicalities of the issue it is right that we call off the sitting. I want to apologise, we will probably shift it, I’m so sorry. I can see so many observers and my parliamentarians in a large number, I say I’m sorry.”

“However, I as well as my principal officers will explore every necessary avenue to bring back the department on its feet. However it is, we will pass the information across,” he added.

Reaching out to ACJ UNIBEN, a source revealed that the sitting was called to discuss the shortage of funds bedevilling the department. It was also stated that the department has been low on funds since their administration was sworn in.

Further, the source said the parliament had been informed of financial misappropriation by the former President of the Association who currently sits as the number one student of the Education Students Association of Nigeria (Uniben Branch) Comrade Nwabuwe Promise Divine and that the sitting was to have him present to say what he knows about the misappropriation.

“As I speak, we can’t carry out any project in the department because we are short of funds and students already paid their dues, but how the money went, no one knew, that’s why we want the ESAN president to come and talk about what he knows about the misappropriation as he’s been fingered in it,” the anonymous source tipped.

ACJ UNIBEN, however, tried to get undercover information about who informed the security of the sitting, but it remains a mystery who could be behind it.
