As a form of response to the alarming security challenges on its campuses and an attempt to improve security in its environs, the University of Benin, in conjunction with Bionomics Nigeria Limited, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday for the supply of 1000 CCTV cameras. The school plans to install the cameras in the Ugbowo main campus and in the Ekehuan campus.
It was gathered that the agreement will run for a period of 15 years and will also feature a facility built in the school by Bionomics to monitor the camera footages for security resolutions. The company will manage and maintain the CCTV system and will be granted the rights of advertising on the school campuses for the period of the agreement.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Lilian Salami, while speaking at the event, described it as historic, and said the CCTV would help to curb crime in the school campuses, stating that the agreement would be a win-win situation for the school and the company.
“This MOU is an agreement I am excited about. The 1000 CCTV will enhance security on the campus and curb crime and vices. The world is dynamic and the CCTV will help us monitor activities on Campus.
“The advertisement is good for Bionomics because the student population presents a good market. For UNIBEN, we will also benefit from the adverts as stipulated in the MOU. History is being made here today and I hope that when the agreement comes to fruition, we will begin to reap the benefits.”, she said.
Prof. Salami cheered the company for finding the University of Benin worthy of the arrangement, noting that all hands would be on deck to see to its success.
Onyedika Ugochukwu, Chief Executive Officer of Bionomics said that that survey for the job would begin immediately to ensure that 100 CCTV are in operation in six months time. He also lauded the VC for giving his outfit the opportunity to work closely with the university, buttressing that all the terms of agreement in the MOU would be adhered to.
