A two-day Progressive Digital Media Summit themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development” was held from August 1st to 2nd, 2025. The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, gave a speech urging Nigerian content creators to use their digital platforms for unity promotion and national development, rather than fostering Nigeria’s division.
Commencing his speech while addressing a large audience of influencers, media professionals, digital strategists, and other reputable figures, he stated that “It is a privilege to address you at this important Digital Media Summit.” He identified the developing and growing influence of online voices in molding public awareness. He urged creators to use digital platforms “as instruments of national progress, and engage in businesses that employ others and create content that uplifts those around you.” He further emphasized that creators should use their “influence to foster unity and not division.”
Moving on, he cautioned and pleaded against the dangers of spreading information without proper verification. “Verify before you amplify,” were his words. He wants our digital space to reflect the standards binding us together as a people and to give a respectable and reputable perspective to the world about who we Nigerians are as a nation.
Also, his administration’s investment in “digital infrastructure and broadband expansion” was made known. This is a result of how well they have come to understand the importance of the digital world. He stated their commitment to making access to the internet a right for all Nigerians. Still on this, he revealed their support for innovations through the “National Digital Innovation Funds” and nurturing the startup ecosystem with policies that promote growth and reduce unnecessary regulations. “We will not lose focus on cyber security. Every Nigerian has the right to be protected in both the physical and digital domain.”
Furthermore, he assured Nigerians, specifically the “young people” of their importance, calling them “the most important investments of the country,” and asserted that their contributions in ideas, energy, and commitment to national development are among “Nigeria’s greatest assets.” He challenged them to use their platforms not only for “expression, anger, or retaliation but for problem-solving” and for building solutions that address our nation’s needs.
He concluded that “Nigeria’s path to prosperity” will be shaped by many things, and making ours inclusive is important. He wants this generation to make impacts that will show not only their readiness for it but also their capability to lead the future. After a short prayer, he ended his speech with “God bless you all.” Applause erupted from the crowd as he handed over the mic.
Although the official closing time of the summit on August 2 was not publicly disclosed, the event concluded with a renewed commitment by participants and organizers to build a national network of responsible digital ambassadors.
