The Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association (NUESA) UNIBEN chapter has expressed its urgent grievances concerning the underrepresented seat allocation for the faculty in the Student Union Government through an official letter to the chairman of the SUG Electoral Commission on the 16th of October, 2024.

According to the letter, the faculty’s parliamentary seats in the SUG have been reduced from 22 seats to 12, which has led many students to feel marginalized and underrepresented.

This decision by the electoral body appears to contradict the objectives and principles of the Student Union Government, which include fairness and equity, and has consequently reduced student engagement in union activities on campus. The association further requested that the body review this decision, believing that granting their request would create a better environment for students to feel valued and participate in the governance of the university.

In the conclusion of the letter, the association made it clear that students of the faculty may withdraw from any further political engagements on campus, including the upcoming Student Union election, if their request is not granted.
