NUEE workers storm AEDC headquarters over unmet demands

by Akinnusimi Omosewa

On the 27th of November,2024. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company’s project at the headquarters was obstructed by some members of the Nigerian Union Electricity Employees, FCT council.

This affected the supply of electricity to some areas in Abuja.

It was discovered that the union gave an ultimatum over unresolved welfare demands, which the AEDC management was unable to address.

This led to a complete shutdown of all AEDC offices due to the failure of the management to meet their requests.

Thus, the workers set out on strike action in an attempt to express their dissatisfaction. The union maintained that the protest would only come to an end when a resolution was reached.

Some workers blocked the gate of the headquarters, whilst carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs.

Some of the placards contained messages like, “No to board interference” and “We demand payments of 15 months” salaries and pension”.

Adefisayo Akinsaya, the AEDC’s head of marketing and communications, confirmed the strike and protest, stating that there was indeed an industrial action that was duly resolved.

Subsequently, the chief technical officer of AEDC and the chairman of the NUEE

confirmed that the strike ended abruptly, after a resolution with the AEDC management.
