The organized labor comprising of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has on 31st May 2024 announced a nationwide indefinite strike effective from Monday 3rd June 2024.
The planned strike action by organized labor is due to the inability of the tripartite committee of the federal government on minimum wage to reach an agreement with the unions over the new minimum wage. Recall that in the last meeting, the federal government through the tripartite committee offered the sum of #60,000 from its initial #57,000 which it proposed as the new minimum wage but was not accepted by the unions. However, both parties reconvened yesterday for another meeting and unfortunately, it ended in an impasse as there was no agreement.
The strike was declared at a joint press conference by the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero and TUC, Festus Usifo. With this latest strike action academic activities are expected to be halted.
