The National Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress suspended the strike action on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, for five days. Recall that the unions declared an indefinite strike action, which commenced on Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s failure to approve a new minimum wage and to reverse the hike in electricity tariff.
The suspension of the strike action came after the union leaders and the Federal Government reached an agreement on a minimum wage higher than N60,000. Although the unions emphasized in a statement that the strike is not called off, but rather on hold, “We are ‘relaxing’ the action for one week and not suspending the strike, to give FG a one-week grace and test their sincerity.”
Expressing its commitment to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000, the Federal Government and the two labour unions (the Tripartite Committee) will continue to meet daily for the next one week to reach an agreeable minimum wage.
