NLC Declares Two-Day Nationwide Strike over Economic Hardship

By Timothy Precious

The Nigerian Labour Congress has declared a two-day nationwide strike in protest against economic hardship in the country.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC president, disclosed this at a press conference on Friday, 16th February.

Previously, on February 9th, NLC and TUC proposed a 14-day Strike Notice over Non-implementation of 6 agreements reached In October 2023.

In a bid to resolve this, President Bola met with the organized labour body in Abuja over the two-week strike notice. The president was duly represented by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who promised that the payment of wages would henceforth be consistent.

It would seem as though the arrangements made to resolve the strike issue proved futile as the NLC president declared the 27th and 28th of February 2024 as the days for the nationwide strike. The aim of these protests is to address issues such as the high cost of living in the country and unfulfilled demands made before. Furthermore, the NLC plans to initiate a nationwide strike starting in March to further emphasize their concerns and grievances.
