The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are poised to suspend their planned indefinite strike following a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
This decision comes after the labor unions had announced their intent to initiate a nationwide strike on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. They cited the government’s failure to alleviate widespread suffering and economic hardship resulting from the removal of subsidy on PMS (Petrol) as their primary reason.
In a significant development, President Tinubu had initially announced a #25,000 wage increment for junior-level federal workers in his Independence Day speech on October 1, 2023. However, after a four-hour closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa aimed at averting the impending industrial action, the Federal Government further declared an additional #35,000 provisional wage increment for the next six months.
NLC President Joe Ajaero addressed the press after the meeting, revealing that this recent wage increment would now apply to all levels of workers across the board.
The leadership of the NLC and TUC will now convene with their members and affiliates across all branches to announce the decision to suspend the planned nationwide strike, which was scheduled to commence on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
