In a significant development, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to suspend further protests following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The resolution came after a fruitful and candid discussion at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.
Dele Alake, the spokesperson for President Tinubu, confirmed the decision, stating that the labor leaders expressed confidence in the President’s ability to address the concerns presented by the Labor Movement in an open and honest manner. As a result, they opted for constructive engagement with the government to resolve all outstanding issues that affect the working people and the Nigerian populace as a whole.
One of the key points discussed during the meeting was the commitment from President Tinubu that the Port Harcourt refineries would begin production by December 2023. This comes as a result of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL) and the Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
President Tinubu assured the Labor leaders of his continued dedication to working in the best interest of Nigeria. He also called on the Labor leaders to collaborate with him in creating a better and economically prosperous country.
In the lead-up to the meeting, major cities across Nigeria experienced protests organized by the NLC and workers, primarily in response to the fuel subsidy removal. However, with the commitment from the government and the prospects of constructive engagement, the Labor Movement decided to put a halt to further protests.
Present at the meeting alongside the Labor leaders were Dele Alake and Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of NNPCL.
