The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), comprising all 36 state governors in Nigeria, has scheduled an emergency meeting today, Wednesday, 27 June 2024, in Abuja over the new minimum wage proposal. The acting director of media and public affairs for the NGF, Halima Ahmed, disclosed this information.

This follows the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting yesterday, Tuesday, 26 June 2024, where the memo on the new minimum wage was deferred on the grounds that President Bola Tinubu had to make further consultations with stakeholders before the bill is sent to the National Assembly and passed into law.

It can be recalled that the Governors Forum had disapproved of the ₦62,000 minimum wage proposal by the Federal Government, stating that its implementation would force some states into borrowing to pay workers, while some states would spend all their federal allocations on paying salaries at the expense of developmental projects. However, organised labour remains adamant on ₦250,000 as the new minimum wage.
