NELFUND Gives Clarification on the Payment of Upkeep Loan

By Theophilus Chibuzo Oliver

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) issued a press release on 21 August 2025 regarding the payment of upkeep loans.

According to the statement, upkeep loan disbursement is strictly in accordance with the academic session of each institution. Accordingly, students will only be entitled to upkeep loans for their current session, and such payments will cease at the end of the institution’s academic year.

In addition, students are advised to apply for the loan at the beginning of each academic session in order to qualify for both institutional charges and upkeep for that particular session.

Furthermore, the NELFUND portal is said to be updated regularly to reflect these changes, thereby ensuring transparency. The portal will only display the amount collected by each student within an academic session.

Institutions were therefore advised to upload their academic calendars and sessional information in a timely manner to ensure that their students receive the full upkeep amount allocated to them for each academic session.

In its concluding statement, NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable and accessible loan support systems to Nigerian students, and called on the cooperation of all stakeholders for swift implementation.
