The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has clarified its position regarding the forthcoming elections of the Law Students Association (LAWSA) at the University of Benin. In a statement issued on 30 November 2024, Comrade Joel Isaac Idahor, Deputy Chairman of the Campus Monitoring Committee in Edo State, made it clear that NAUS has not endorsed any candidate.
Describing the claims of endorsement as “false and unfounded,” NAUS emphasised its neutrality in the election process. The association reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency, urging students to make informed choices based on the competence and vision of the candidates.
“We encourage all students to support candidates who truly represent their interests and are dedicated to serving their peers effectively,” the statement read. NAUS also emphasised the importance of inclusivity and democracy, assuring the student community that their voices would be respected throughout the process.
This clarification comes amid increasing political activity in the Faculty of Law, with rumours circulating about alleged endorsements by NAUS. The organisation’s response aims to dispel these speculations and uphold its reputation as a neutral and supportive body.
