In compliance with the joint resolution issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has called upon its members to commence an indefinite strike action starting from Tuesday, 3rd October, 2023. This decision comes in response to what they describe as the Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude toward addressing the demands of the Labour sector.

The primary concerns at the heart of this strike revolve around the urgent need for the government to provide appropriate relief for the hardships faced by Nigerian workers following the removal of the fuel subsidy and the harmonization of the foreign exchange market, an issue that has undoubtedly inflicted considerable hardship on both workers and the general population.

In light of these, NASU has urged its members across the entire Federal Republic of Nigeria to actively participate in this comprehensive strike action. The aim is to prompt the Federal Government to respond positively to the demands of the Labour sector.

In a circular, dated 28th September, and addressed to all NASU State Secretaries and Branches, General Secretary Prince Peters A. Adeyemi, JP, stated, “NASU members across the length and breadth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are by this circular directed to embark on total and comprehensive strike action as directed with a view to getting the Federal Government to react positively to the demands of Labour,” as NASU aligns itself with the broader labour movement’s call for change.
