Former President H.E. Sam Nujoma, popularly known by the people of Namibia as one of the founding fathers of the nation, has passed away at the age of 95.
Sam Nujoma, a revolutionary leader, guided Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first President for 15 years.
The country’s neighbor, Eswatini, also sent its condolences. In a message on his official X account, the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Russell Dlamini, wrote: “On behalf of His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, the Government and the People of the Kingdom of Eswatini, we extend our deepest condolences to the People and Government of Namibia on the passing of former President H.E. Sam Nujoma.”
According to reports, Nujoma is credited by many Namibians for his leadership in national healing and reconciliation following the country’s war of independence, which caused deep divisions due to apartheid South Africa’s oppressive policies.
