Namibia elects Nandi-Ndaitwah from the governing South West African People Organization people (SWAPO) as its first female President
Nandi – Ndaitwah is the newly elected president of Namibia. The 72-year-old Namibian politician becomes the first female president of the Southern African Country.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia announced that Ndaitwah was the winner with over 57 of the ballots cast. Her main opponent, Panduleni Itula of Independent Patriots for Change(IPC) polled second to Ndaitwah by a whopping 25.5 percent of the votes.
The presidential battle won by Nandi-Ndaitwah had witnessed two extensions because of technical challenges and logistics making it difficult for people to receive ballot papers. The incidents made some voters scratch the sessions after spending about 12 hours in line.
The IPC has adamantly refused to accept the outcome of this Election. Itula stated, there was a “multitude of irregularities.” He further stated, “The IPC shall not recognize the outcome of that election.” ICP has promised to challenge the outcome of the elections in Court.
Nandi – Ndaitwah, who is currently the vice president of Namibia, is a member of the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO). This organization had been ruling after the independence of Namibia in 1990.
President Elect, Ndaitwah stated after the announcement of her victory that “the Namibian Nation has voted for peace and Stability”. Ndaitwah was declared as the president-elect on Tuesday, 3rd December, in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.
Political leaders of other African states have Extended their hearty congratulations, including the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who congratulated Nandi-Ndaitwah after she was declared the president-elect of Namibia.
